Foundation Donors

The Christos Steliou Joannou Foundation, the most generous expression of humanitarianism and social solidarity of all times in Cyprus, is a donation of the Stelios and Elli Joannou couple, in memory of their son Christos.

The Foundation.operates in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, from October 1983 with expenses of the Goverment, which participates in the Board of Directors.

It is a legal entity of private law registered in accordance with the Societies and Insitutions Law of the Republic of Cyprus.

Despite the fact that in 1983 it came into operation as a Social and Vocational Rehabilitation Centre, today it has been expanded to a multidimentional organisation for the provision of services, and a model centre offering high standard specialised programmes and services to around 170 adults, with moderate and mild mental handicap from all over Cyprus.

Apart from the personal fulfilment, vocational rehabilitation and social integration, which form its main objectives and have improved significantly the position of the person with a mental handicap in the Cypriot society, the Foundation has been a leader in the introduction of pioneer institutions and beliefs, which have upgraded substantially the standard of services to these people in Cyprus.

The Special Olympics and the Very Special Arts programmes, the Portage system for early intervention, the exchanges with other countries, the enlightenment of society, the support and guidance of parents, the invitation of foreign experts, the further education of the personnel, the promotion of legislation, the safeguarding of the rights, and the improvement of the quality of life of the people with a mental handicap, the residence in small units intergrated into society are only some of the achievements of the Christos Steliou Joannou Foundation.

All the above, along with the constant and unimpaired interest of the Joannou couple and the devotion and zeal of the personnel, form a standard guarantee and basic predisposition for a constant upward course and a future, which seems rosy, with the Foundation constantly devoted to its mission, for humanitarian offering and scientific excellence.
